Last Friday, my old pal Andy Bell wrote this post about what’s wrong with Tech City. He seemed to have two beefs; the name and the idea itself. I think he’s wrong on both counts.
The name
At my school, most people had a nickname. These evolved organically. Occasionally someone invented themselves a nickname. This had two effects:

The Manchester teams have moved the Premier League on a notch this season. You can’t keep your eyes off them with their free flowing football and goals galore.
As an homage to Manchester for raising the bar of footballing entertainment, between now and the end of the season we’re doing every Manchester United and Manchester City league and European game.

Yesterday morning Dave McClure came to our office and was asked to give a talk to the startups based here. I’m very glad he came. He was helpful, intelligent and uplifting.

We have a new in-play football game called Ole Ole Ole. You hit play when the teams are pinging it about and a 1 minute countdown starts. Whoever accumulates the most passes in a minute by the end of the match wins the pot.
